Bringing together technology, data and people to support the UK’s infrastructure needs

The Data & Analytics Facility for National Infrastructure, DAFNI, housed within the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, was established in 2017 to help advance infrastructure research through the development of a secure yet accessible database.

Following 4 years of extensive research and development, DAFNI are ready to share their findings with the wider community at their Official Launch event taking place online on Monday 5th July 2021. About DAFNI

The DAFNI platform sources and stores data from a variety of key industries such as transport, communications and energy for use by key infrastructure businesses.

The sophisticated software enables big data analysis, simulation and modelling capabilities in an easy-to-use interface, designed for use by non-expert users. Key stakeholders from the sector, including government and academia, are able to access data for planning and forecasting potential infrastructure changes within the UK, significantly aiding in the overall decision-making process.

With the UK’s ever-growing population, it is vital to understand how any proposed changes could affect society and the environment, and assess the impact of external factors such as global warming on any current infrastructure. By simplifying how data is accessed and presented, stakeholders are able to get a clearer picture before any investment is made, reducing time, costs and resources.

Funded by the UK Collaboratorium for Research on Infrastructure and Cities (UKCRIC), key stakeholders include the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and a governance board of 11 universities including the University of Oxford. DAFNI’s network is growing and their work is being recognised nationwide.
