In a world where everything is going digital at an ever-increasing rate and Google has become a verb, it is critical that your website is managed to make it appear at the top of Google’s search results, when a keyword is searched by an online user.
At the Bath Business Show last week (October 2016), our marketing assistant sat in on a talk conducted by a department of Google, where the importance of Google ‘search’ was explained.
The ways in which you can control your website in order to maximise website traffic for your business, and optimise the presence of your business on Google were discussed.
"Search is at the heart of everything we do and thus as a business, it is vital to make sure your website can be found as quickly as possible."
From running trends to find out when and where people search the most, and ensuring your website is mobile friendly, to using the right software, there are many strategies you can implement to make your website digitally visible.
Somewhat surprisingly, the latest Small Business Survey (PDF) from the Department for Business, Industry and Skills (BIS) provides a wealth of interesting research, from business performance to business capability. Amongst the findings, it reveals that only 76% of small businesses have a business website.
A website offers a multitude of benefits to businesses, from giving potential customers information about your products and services to acting as an online sales platform and making you more findable.
Read on to discover the top tips on digital visibility from Google themselves…
One of the leading factors determining the digital visibility of a website is how quickly it runs. Thus, before anything else, you must ensure your website is fast and responsive.
This means investing in the right kind of software to ensure it works across all devices, including mobile phones; 80% of consumers now use their smartphones to search online. Subsequently, 50% will visit a store to buy a product the same day after having searched online.
Optimising your mobile SEO includes having easy clickable links, content that is readable on a small screen and fast-loading high resolution images. Images must also be well labelled since key words are paramount when it comes to Google search.
This leads to keyword planner, which is fundamental. Google works by indexing your website and finding it via Google ‘spiders’. The keywords searched by online users will determine how quickly your webpage is found. So when creating content for your website, make sure you know the keywords your target markets will be searching, and take this into consideration when designing your content.
Another important factor is consumer insight. In order to drive the most online traffic to your website, you must acquire a knowledge of who is searching and when. To do this, you can run trends on Google to see when people are searching the most i.e. what time of year, and target those markets accordingly.
Follow these simple steps and the chances of your target markets finding your website will be greatly increased.
